Spring 2024 orders ship in April

Big thanks to everyone who bought trees over the winter!

We sell bare root trees for spring and fall planting, from Missoula, MT.

In the spring we ship dormant bare root plants after the ground thaws but before the plants leaf out. In the fall we ship after the plants have gone dormant for the winter, but while there is still time to plant before the ground freezes.

For local pickup, select local pick-up option for shipping and we will contact you to arrange a time for your order to be picked up.

Our seedlings are grown from the best varieties of today.

Seedlings are the children of the parent plants, and so each one is slightly different, each from each other as well as from the parents. Much like garden vegetables have been slowly improved over millennia, or as the famed lineages of apple varieties grafted everywhere today, your planting of our seedlings is a direct participation in the ongoing history of plant-human interaction, of what foods people like to eat, and of whatever comes after. We hope that someday you will plant seedlings from the best plants you got from us, so that we can keep the whole thing going.

We select seed from the best parent plants growing in our local area, as well as the best cold hardy varieties available at our grocery store and local farmers markets. For nuts we gather seed from the best nut trees in our area, and for nuts we can't find locally but that do grow here, we purchase those from top quality nurseries and orchards in the Northern US and Canada who sell nut seeds from proven trees of their own stock.

"Plant like your life depends on it, for it does!"  - Collette O'Neil

Trees are sanctuaries. Whoever knows how to speak to them, whoever knows how to listen to them, can learn the truth. They do not preach learning and precepts; they preach, undeterred by particulars, the ancient law of life.

Herman Hesse

If you catch the through-fall [of rain through a tree canopy], it is not rain. It’s as different from rain as what goes down the plug in your bath is from what comes in through the tap. It contains 20 to 30 times the phosphates of rain, it contains a whole slew of trace elements, and it contains organic acids. It is the tree’s bathwater, and it’s a much richer substance than rain.

Bill Mollison

We have nothing to fear and a great deal to learn from trees, that vigorous and pacific tribe which without stint produces strengthening essences for us, soothing balms, and in whose gracious company we spend so many cool, silent, and intimate hours.

Marcel Proust
