Why Contract Growing?

While our general sales inventory is perfect for smaller orders, setting up a contract grow out of a specific set of plants gives you the peace of mind that we’re growing the exact trees in the quantity you require—ready for your project timeline.

The contract growing process typically takes around 12-24 months - six to twelve months to source and germinate the seed, one summer to grow out the seedlings, then overwintering the first year to select the cold hardy ones. The trees you receive at the end of this process have been tested by the elements at each step of the way, so you are sure to receive vigorous, hardy plants.

How It Works

  1. Minimum Order Requirements
    • For a contract grow, we require a minimum order of 1000+ trees, 100 seedlings per species.
  2. Contract Timeline
    • Contracts need to be established before the 3rd weekend of August each year. This ensures we have enough time to source the seed during the fall, stratify them over the winter, and then grow out the seedlings over the next year.
  3. Custom Growing for Your Project
    • When choosing between species, some plants are site specific and some plants are site adaptable - w grow the trees specifically for your needs.

The Contract Process, Step by Step

Year 1: Get Started Early

This is the time to decide what tree species you need for your project. Whether you're unsure or already know exactly what you're looking for, we're here to help guide you through the selection process. We’ll discuss what works best for your site, your management goals, and how to make your planting successful.

Once you’re ready, place your order with us, and we’ll start the process of growing your trees. Contracts begin 3rd weekend in August, but getting in touch early will help us align everything with your project’s timeline.

Year 2: Prepare Your Land

While we're growing your trees, it's time to get your land ready for planting. Prep your planting site, source your mulch, set up irrigation, fencing, etc to ensure that your site will provide the best growing conditions for your new trees. Your land should be prepped and ready to plant for the following spring.

We'll continue growing the seedlings during the summer and then when fall arrives, we plant your trees out into our nursery beds to overwinter.

Year 3: Planting Time

When your trees are ready, we’ll dig them up and ship them to you or you can pick them up directly from our nursery. The key is to plant them while they are dormant. Trees are perishable, so timing is crucial. If you're not able to plant all of them immediately, store them in the coolest, shadiest spot available (like the north side of a building) until you can get them in the ground.
